Links We Like!
On this page we have listed websites that have software or resources we like.
Some of the software is included on our CDs, but some of the software has a license which doesn't permit redistribution, so we have provided a link here.
If you have any suggestions for links to be included on this site please contact us.
We are not responsible for the content of any of these linked sites.
All of these links will open new browser windows for you to view the site...
www.8daysaweek.co.uk is an Amazon.co.uk associated web site. You can search Amazon.co.uk for any item using the links on this site (even unrelated things), or go straight to a book or recommendation using the direct links.
Firefox - available on the 8daysaweek CD CD
Firefox is our preferred browser, but we try to make sure our pages work with other browsers too.
Firefox features include Popup Blocking, tabbed browsing, and more.
Here's what they say about it:
"Firefox empowers you to browse faster, more safely and more efficiently than with any
other browser. Join more than 44 million others and make the switch today — Firefox imports your
Favorites, settings and other information, so you have nothing to lose."
One of the great things about Firefox (and Thunderbird) is that you can install extensions to them, which add features to the software. Here are some of our favourites:
Thunderbird - available on the 8daysaweek CD
Thunderbird is Mozilla's next generation e-mail client. "Thunderbird makes emailing safer, faster, and easier than ever before with the industry's best implementations of features such as intelligent spam filters, built-in RSS reader, quick search, and much more."
Thunderbird is great! *Some* people prefer it to a well-known pre-installed email client found on many computers ;)
One of the great things about Thunderbird (and Firefox) is that you can install extensions to them, which add features to the software. Here are some of our favourites:
The GIMP - available on the 8daysaweek CD
"The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages."
Mozilla - available on the 8daysaweek CD CD
Mozilla is a web-browser, an advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and simple HTML editor - all your Internet needs in one application.
(You may not have heard of Mozilla before, but you've probably heard of Netscape - Mozilla is the open-source browser on which Netscape is based - Netscape 7.1 is based on Mozilla 1.4)
Mozilla's features include tabbed browsing, Email and a pop-up blocker that is very useful. We recommend you configure your computer to play a sound when pop-ups are blocked, just so that you are aware whether a legitimate window is being blocked.
Adobe Reader® - available on the
8daysaweek CD for Windows®. An alternative PDF viewer
(smaller and faster) is also available on the
8daysaweek CD for Windows®.
You can download the latest Adobe Reader® using the link above (20mb).
www.whatiscopyright.org explains Copyright, who can use it and how.
AVG Free Edition is Anti-Virus software.
AVG Free Edition is available free-of-charge to home users! AVG Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only. We have installed it on friends' computers (and test computers) and found it to work very well.
There is an alternative Open Source anti-virus program included on the 8daysaweek CD for Windows®
ZoneAlarm is a software firewall that provides basic protection from malicious hackers/crackers, preventing them from accessing/controlling your PC.
"ZoneAlarm is free for individual and not-for-profit charitable entity use (excluding governmental entities and educational institutions)."
Spybot S&D is software to protect your privacy while browsing the world wide web.
"Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that [some] anti-virus applications do not cover. If you see new toolbars in your [browser] that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if your browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies."
K9 is an email filtering application.
"K9 is an email filtering application that works in conjunction with your regular POP3 email program and automatically classifies incoming emails as spam (junk email) or non-spam without the need for maintaining dozens of rules or constant updates to be downloaded. It uses intelligent statistical analysis that can result in extremely high accuracy over time.
K9 learns from its mistakes and becomes better and better at being able to identify spam. More importantly it learns to recognize what you consider to be spam.
K9 is for standard POP3 email accounts only. It does not directly support Hotmail, AOL or any other kind of webmail type systems, nor does it support SSL or secure authentication as used by MSN. "
Copernic Desktop Search™ - The Search Engine for Your PC™
Find Your Files and Emails with the Power of a Search Engine on Your Desktop.
"By far - and I mean, literally, miles ahead - the best local engine in this category is Copernic Desktop Search." Chris Pirillo, CPU Magazine
Who is Milly? We don't know. How did we find iMilly.com? We can't remember!
This site has some interesting articles and some useful tools. Don't worry if some of it seems technical, just skip those bits ;) We would recommend that you read the information in the article "Anonymizing Google's Cookie", which you may find enlightening.

Feel free to put links to www.8daysaweek.co.uk on your web-site. All we ask is that you link to the main page (http://www.8daysaweek.co.uk/) not to any of the other pages, as the names of these pages may change - which could result in a "dead" link on your site.
If you would like to include some descriptive text along with the link here is our suggestion: You can click here for html code to paste into your html page. If you include your "personal discount voucher code" with the link you could earn a referral benefit for each CD we sell from your referral. |
