Firefox - available on the 8daysaweek CD CD
Firefox is our preferred browser, but we try to make sure our pages work with other browsers too.
Firefox features include Popup Blocking, tabbed browsing, and more.

One of the great things about Firefox (and Thunderbird) is that you can install extensions to them, which add features to the software. Here are some of our favourites:

- Html Validator
- OpenDownload
- Search for more extensions here - this is not an exhaustive list, and there may be other extensions that do the same thing as these. We aren't endorsing these extensions, but we hope you'll like them if you decide to try them out.
Thunderbird - available on the 8daysaweek CD
Thunderbird is Mozilla's next generation e-mail client. "Thunderbird makes emailing safer, faster, and easier than ever before with the industry's best implementations of features such as intelligent spam filters, built-in RSS reader, quick search, and much more."
Thunderbird is great! *Some* people prefer it to a well-known pre-installed email client found on many computers ;)

The GIMP - available on the 8daysaweek CD

Mozilla - available on the 8daysaweek CD CD
Mozilla is a web-browser, an advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and simple HTML editor - all your Internet needs in one application.
(You may not have heard of Mozilla before, but you've probably heard of Netscape - Mozilla is the open-source browser on which Netscape is based - Netscape 7.1 is based on Mozilla 1.4)
Mozilla's features include tabbed browsing, Email and a pop-up blocker that is very useful. We recommend you configure your computer to play a sound when pop-ups are blocked, just so that you are aware whether a legitimate window is being blocked.
Adobe Reader® - available on the
8daysaweek CD for Windows®. An alternative PDF viewer
(smaller and faster) is also available on the
8daysaweek CD for Windows®.
You can download the latest Adobe Reader® using the link above (20mb).
Many files today are distributed in Portable Document Format (PDF). OpenOffice.org
can create these files simply and easily for you. To read PDFs
you need Adobe Reader®. Visit the Adobe web site via the link.

AVG Free Edition is Anti-Virus software.
AVG Free Edition is available free-of-charge to home users! AVG Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only. We have installed it on friends' computers (and test computers) and found it to work very well.
There is an alternative Open Source anti-virus program included on the 8daysaweek CD for Windows®
ZoneAlarm is a software firewall that provides basic protection from malicious hackers/crackers, preventing them from accessing/controlling your PC.

Spybot S&D is software to protect your privacy while browsing the world wide web.
"Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that [some] anti-virus applications do not cover. If you see new toolbars in your [browser] that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if your browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. K9 is an email filtering application.
